ASMS Presents: 2025 Kazanjian Lecture Saturday, October 11 Sat, Oct 11 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
James E. Zins, MD will deliver the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS) Kazanjian Lecture during Plastic Surgery The Meeting 2025 in New Orleans. Dr. Zins' lecture is titled: A Road Less Travelled.
The Kazanjian Lecture will take place from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. CT, Saturday, Oct. 11, 2025.
Dr. Zins attended Phillips Exeter Academy and Princeton University before graduating from medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. He stayed on to do his plastic surgery residency at Penn and completed his craniofacial fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania and Philadelphia’s Children’s Hospital under Linton Whitaker.
After Philadelphia, he did a maxillofacial fellowship at Great Ormand Street and University College Hospital, London. He joined Cleveland Clinic serving as head of the section of Craniofacial Surgery for eight years before focusing the remainder of his career on facial aesthetic surgery. He became chair of the Department of Plastic Surgery in 1991 and served in that position for 31 years. He is the current head of the section of aesthetic surgery and director of the multidisciplinary Advanced Aesthetic Institute at Cleveland Clinic.
Dr. Zins has served as president of The American Association of Plastic Surgeons, director of The American Board of Plastic Surgery, member and Vice Chair of the Resident Review Committee of Plastic Surgery of the ACGME. He received the Distinguished Fellow Award from the American Association in 2025.
He has always been passionate about resident education. He has served as associate editor of the Face Section of the Aesthetic Surgery Journal, associate editor of the Annals of Plastic Surgery aesthetic section, as the PSF Visiting Professor, the AAPS Visiting Professor, and the Robert Goldwyn lecturer. He has been the director of Cleveland Clinic post graduate aesthetic fellowship for twenty years. He currently serves as the Chair of the ASAPS endorsed post graduate Aesthetic Fellowship Committee.
He has written over 250 peer-reviewed publications predominantly in the areas of resident education, facial aesthetics, and craniofacial surgery. He has edited five textbooks and over thirty book chapters.
History of the Kazanjian Lecture
In 1949, Dr. Varaztad Kazanjian published the first comprehensive discussion of the surgical treatment of facial injuries. Originally founded in 1965, the Kazanjian lectureship series are important in communicating breakthroughs in maxillofacial knowledge to the ASMS community.
