Complications of Common Operations: How to Navigate the Inevitable Thursday, October 15 Thu, Oct 15 1:30-3:00 p.m. CDT
Complications are an inevitable part of surgical practice, even in the most common and routinely performed operations. How surgeons anticipate, recognize, and respond to these complications often determines patient outcomes and long-term success.
This 90-minute session focuses on the prevention, early recognition, and management of complications arising from common operative procedures. Faculty will present high-yield cases illustrating frequently encountered intraoperative and postoperative challenges, highlighting practical decision-making strategies and evidence-based management options. Discussion will include technical pitfalls, patient-related risk factors, communication strategies, and timing of intervention.
By emphasizing thoughtful navigation of complications rather than avoidance alone, this session equips surgeons with tools to manage adverse events confidently, minimize downstream morbidity, and maintain trust with patients and care teams.
Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:
Identify common complications associated with frequently performed surgical procedures and recognize early warning signs.
Analyze patient, procedural, and technical factors that contribute to the development of complications.
Apply systematic approaches to the intraoperative and postoperative management of surgical complications.
Implement strategies to prevent escalation of complications and reduce long-term functional or aesthetic morbidity.
Demonstrate effective communication and decision-making skills when managing complications with patients and multidisciplinary teams.
