PSF President’s Panel: Plastic Surgery Residency Selection: Rigorous Requirement or Empty Credential? Sat, Oct 17 2:00-3:00 p.m. CDT

Research has become an increasingly prominent component of the pathway into plastic surgery, from medical school applications to residency selection. For many applicants, scholarly productivity is viewed as a marker of commitment for an academic surgical career. At the same time, the growing emphasis on research output may not be a predictor of future success in plastic surgery.

This panel will explore the evolving role of research in plastic surgery training and selection. Featuring perspectives from a medical student, residency program leadership, and leaders in plastic surgery education, the discussion will examine what types and if of scholarly activity is meaningful and discuss alternative means of demonstrating commitment and qualification for plastic surgery residency. Panelists will also consider how research requirements may influence medical student decision-making and diversity of the applicant pool.

Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how research is currently perceived in the selection process, how applicants can approach scholarship with purpose, and how educators and programs might better align research expectations with the values and competencies needed in plastic surgery.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the current role of research and scholarly productivity in medical school and plastic surgery residency selection.

  2. Discuss the potential benefits and limitations of using research experience as a marker of applicant readiness, commitment, and future potential.

  3. Discuss alternatives to research for medical students to distinguish themselves

  4. Explore strategies for aligning research expectations with authentic scholarship and professional development.
