Ultrasound for Hand Surgery Fri, Oct 16 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. CDT

Point-of-care ultrasound has become an increasingly valuable tool in hand surgery, offering real-time, dynamic assessment of soft tissue, nerve, tendon, and vascular pathology while enhancing diagnostic accuracy and procedural safety. Despite its growing utility, many hand surgeons have limited formal training in ultrasound acquisition and interpretation specific to the upper extremity.

This live course provides a practical introduction to ultrasound applications in hand surgery, combining focused didactic instruction with live demonstration and case-based learning. Faculty will review essential ultrasound principles, equipment selection, probe handling, and image optimization, followed by common diagnostic and procedural applications relevant to hand surgeons. Emphasis will be placed on clinically actionable skills that can be immediately integrated into practice.

Designed for surgeons at all levels, this course aims to demystify ultrasound and empower participants to confidently incorporate ultrasound into the evaluation and management of common hand and wrist conditions.

Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the basic principles of ultrasound physics, equipment selection, and probe handling relevant to hand and wrist imaging.

  2. Identify normal sonoanatomy of key structures in the hand and wrist, including tendons, nerves, vessels, and joints.

  3. Recognize common pathologic findings on ultrasound relevant to hand surgery practice.

  4. Apply ultrasound techniques to guide common diagnostic and interventional procedures in the hand and wrist.

  5. Integrate point-of-care ultrasound into clinical decision-making to improve diagnostic accuracy and procedural safety.

Accreditation: The American Society of Plastic Surgeons® (ASPS) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Designation: The ASPS designates this live activity for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
