Facial Nerve Complications: Recognition, Decision-Making, and Reconstructive Strategies Saturday, October 17 Sat, Oct 17 8:00-9:30 a.m. CDT
Facial nerve injury and dysfunction represent significant sources of morbidity in aesthetic, reconstructive, oncologic, and trauma-related facial surgery. Variability in timing of recognition, diagnostic evaluation, and intervention strategies can substantially influence functional recovery and patient quality of life. This session will review the pathophysiology and classification of facial nerve injuries, intraoperative risk mitigation techniques, and evidence-based approaches to acute and delayed management. Emphasis will be placed on diagnostic algorithms, reconstructive options, and multidisciplinary rehabilitation strategies to optimize functional and aesthetic outcomes in patients experiencing facial nerve complications.
Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:
Classify facial nerve injuries using established grading and injury classification systems to guide clinical decision-making.
Evaluate patients with suspected facial nerve dysfunction using appropriate clinical assessment tools and adjunctive diagnostic studies.
Compare surgical and nonsurgical management strategies for acute and delayed facial nerve complications, including nerve repair, grafting, transfer, and static reanimation techniques.
Develop a comprehensive management plan that integrates timing of intervention, reconstructive options, and rehabilitative strategies to optimize functional recovery and patient-centered outcomes.
