Mandible Fracture - Best Strategies for Controlling Occlusion Fri, Oct 16 8:00-9:30 a.m. CDT

Accurate restoration and maintenance of occlusion are critical determinants of functional and aesthetic outcomes in mandible fracture management. Variability in fracture patterns, dentition status, fixation techniques, and intraoperative decision-making can contribute to malocclusion and postoperative complications. This session will examine contemporary strategies for achieving and maintaining occlusal control, including preoperative planning, maxillomandibular fixation techniques, virtual surgical planning, and fixation sequencing. Through case-based discussion and evidence review, participants will explore technical pearls, complication avoidance strategies, and methods to optimize outcomes in both dentate and edentulous patients.

Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Analyze common causes of malocclusion following mandible fracture repair and their relationship to fracture pattern and fixation strategy.

  2. Evaluate preoperative and intraoperative techniques for establishing and verifying proper occlusion, including maxillomandibular fixation methods and adjunctive technologies.

  3. Compare fixation sequencing and plating strategies for various mandibular fracture patterns to optimize occlusal stability.

  4. Formulate an evidence-informed operative plan to prevent and manage postoperative occlusal discrepancies in both dentate and edentulous patients.
