From Burn Bed to Operating Room: Merging Burn Care with Reconstructive Principles Sat, Oct 11 2:00-3:30 p.m. CDT

This session will focus on the relevance, overlap, and importance of burn and plastic surgery disciplines. For burn care, we will discuss new technologies that can be adapted into plastic surgery. Focus will be on laser therapy, new wound care closure products, and the use of acellular dermal matrices. We will discuss how these technologies can be used in a general plastic surgery practice. From the plastic surgery aspect, we will discuss the need of plastic surgery in the care of both acute and chronic burns. Topics that will be discussed include the use of microsurgery in a high-risk population and local and regional flaps for wound closure and reconstruction. We will discuss patient selection, technical pearls, and postoperative management. Following this, we will have a roundtable discussion on strategies from the panelists on how to increase burn education and interest for plastic surgery residents. The session will end with a wider discussion with the audience about the overlap of the two fields and to develop strategies to improve burn education and recruitment.

At the completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify aspects of burn and plastic surgery care that overlap in clinical care.
  2. List new burn care technologies and ways they can be adapted to plastic surgery.
  3. Discuss the role of microsurgery and regional flaps in acute and chronic burn care.
  4. Identify ways of enhancing burn education for plastic surgery residents.
