Tried and True Facelift Techniques: Alternatives to the Deep Plane Sat, Oct 11 2:00-3:30 p.m. CDT

While deep plane facelift techniques have gained increased visibility, many plastic surgeons continue to achieve outstanding and lasting results using a range of time-tested alternatives. This session will review established facelift approaches such as SMAS plication, SMASectomy, subcutaneous lifts, and composite techniques that offer flexibility, predictability, and broad applicability. Faculty will present case-based outcomes, technical refinements, and decision-making frameworks for selecting the optimal approach based on patient anatomy, aging patterns, and aesthetic goals. Emphasis will be placed on reproducibility, safety, and adapting classic methods to contemporary patient expectations.

Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the surgical principles and procedural steps involved in traditional facelift techniques such as SMAS plication, SMASectomy, and subcutaneous lifts.
  2. Compare the advantages, limitations, and aesthetic outcomes of non–deep plane facelift options relative to more extensive dissection techniques.
  3. Select appropriate facelift approaches based on patient-specific anatomy, aging characteristics, and desired outcomes, incorporating evidence-based surgical planning.
