Awake Body Contouring Thursday, October 9 Thu, Oct 9 3:30-4:30 p.m. CDT
The use of local anesthetics and tumescent anesthesia has expanded well beyond minor procedures, enabling a wide range of body contouring and reconstructive surgeries to be performed safely without general anesthesia. With proper training and patient selection, procedures such as arm lifts, thigh lifts, mini and full abdominoplasties, buttock lifts, mastopexies, and gynecomastia reductions can be conducted under local anesthesia with sedation. This session will examine the clinical, operational, and patient-centered aspects of offering awake surgical procedures, addressing protocols, safety considerations, and strategies for patient communication and comfort.
Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:
- Identify the range of surgical procedures that can be safely performed under tumescent and local anesthesia with sedation in a plastic surgery setting.
- Assess patient selection criteria, preoperative planning, and intraoperative protocols critical for awake surgical procedures.
- Implement best practices to optimize patient safety, comfort, and satisfaction during awake aesthetic and reconstructive surgeries.
