Avoiding SKYNET: Ethics and Liability for AI in Plastic Surgery Sat, Oct 11 8:00-9:30 a.m. CDT

The doctor-patient relationship, a pillar in healthcare, is set to be greatly affected, and it is the job of physicians and professional societies to make sure that the human aspect of medicine is kept throughout this process. We will discuss our duty as leaders in the world of Plastic Surgery, and the need to be the guarantors of quality care while navigating this exciting and new path. In terms of the effects of AI on Plastic Surgery, we cannot avoid talking about liability and economy, but other important subjects are currently in need of review, including who will be responsible to make sure AI models are validated and accurate, and how patients will respond to them.

At the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Identify key roles of AI in the present and future of Plastic Surgery.
  2. Discuss important ethical considerations for AI in healthcare.
  3. Outline the risks, challenges and benefits we are set to encounter with AI.
  4. Examine the response of patients and physicians to this new technology.
  5. Propose guidelines to lead opinions for safe and efficient AI in Plastic Surgery.
  6. Provide guidance for implementation of AI for small practice settings
