Flipping out: Prevention and Management of Implant Malposition / Pocket Control Thu, Oct 9 1:30-3:00 p.m. CDT

Effective pocket control is a cornerstone of successful implant-based breast reconstruction. This session will delve into the critical principles of pocket creation, management, and reinforcement, emphasizing how these factors influence implant positioning, stability, and aesthetic outcomes. Faculty will review various pocket techniques, patient-specific anatomical considerations, and the impact of surgical approach on long-term results. Attendees will explore the role of biological materials such as acellular dermal matrices and synthetic meshes in reinforcing pocket architecture and minimizing complications. Through a comprehensive discussion of intraoperative tools, complication management, and long-term care strategies, this session aims to equip reconstructive surgeons with practical skills to prevent and address implant malposition effectively.

Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Define the principles of pocket control in implant-based breast reconstruction and its impact on aesthetic outcomes.
  2. Compare various pocket formation techniques and evaluate their influence on implant positioning, stability, and complication risk.
  3. Identify key factors—such as patient anatomy, tissue quality, and surgical technique—that affect pocket creation and control.
  4. Recognize common complications associated with poor pocket control, including malposition and capsular contracture, and implement strategies for prevention and management.
  5. Apply advanced surgical methods, intraoperative tools, and biologic materials to optimize pocket integrity and enhance long-term reconstructive success.
