Scalp Reconstruction Thursday, October 9 Thu, Oct 9 5:00-6:00 p.m. CDT
Scalp reconstruction presents unique challenges due to the region’s limited elasticity, aesthetic significance, and proximity to critical cranial structures. This session provides an in-depth review of current reconstructive strategies for scalp defects, ranging from local flaps and tissue expansion to free tissue transfer. Emphasis will be placed on patient selection, operative planning, complication avoidance, and multidisciplinary coordination, particularly in oncologic and traumatic cases. Faculty will discuss technical nuances and case-based decision-making to optimize both functional and aesthetic outcomes.
Upon completion of this learning activity, participants should be able to:
- Differentiate among reconstructive options for scalp defects based on defect size, location, and patient-specific factors.
- Apply principles of flap design, tissue expansion, and microsurgical techniques to complex scalp reconstructions.
- Identify potential complications in scalp reconstruction and implement strategies to mitigate surgical risks.
- Integrate multidisciplinary considerations, including neuro-oncology and cranial hardware management, into operative planning.
