Opening Ceremonies 2024

Join us at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, in Ballroom 20AB at the San Diego Convention Center to celebrate innovations in plastic surgery and a historic year.

This special event also will showcase the Presidential Address, Special Achievement Awards and much more! We’ll recognize accomplishments, share in the specialty’s successes and announce the ASPS Patients of Courage.

The Patients of Courage: Triumph Over Adversity Awards recognize truly inspiring patients whose lives have been changed or saved through reconstructive surgery and have transformed their experiences into unique programs that give back to their communities. Each Patient of Courage personifies the limitless potential of reconstructive surgery as well as the power of the human spirit.

Below is a recap of the 2023 Patient of Courage honorees.

2023 Patients of Courage

2023 Patient of Courage Laurence Busse, MD, MBALaurence Busse, MD, MBA

Nominated by Thomas F. Crais, MD, FACS

In 1990, a car ride became a pivotal point for 19-year-old Laurence Busse. The ensuing collision left him with burns over 85% of his body. But through sheer determination, unparalleled family support and a dedicated medical team, he defied the odds.

His recovery was only the beginning. From earning an MBA to becoming a revered physician and mentor, Laurence transformed his harrowing experience into a beacon of hope and resilience for many. His story stands as a testament to the human spirit and the power of perseverance.

2023 Patient of Courage Harrison “Gray” CanalesHarrison "Gray" Canales

Nominated by James Thornton, MD, FACS

Harrison "Gray" Canales navigated a childhood marked by numerous surgeries for a congenital facial deformity. Along with his loving family, an extraordinary team of doctors at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia's Craniofacial Clinic supported and cared for Gray from infancy through adulthood. Then, supported by a dedicated medical team at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW), he triumphed over challenges that included unexpected complications.

Today, a confident young man, Gray actively gives back, mentoring children with craniofacial differences, volunteering at his church and drawing strength from his community.

2023 Patient of Courage Cinde DolphinCinde Dolphin

Nominated by David E. Sahar, MD, FACS

Inspired by her personal experience throughout four separate cancer diagnoses, Cinde Dolphin designed a soft, zippered pouch worn like an apron – and the "KILI Carrier" was born. Patented in 2021, it's now used in hospitals nationwide for various surgeries to eliminate the daily hassles of managing drains. The name "KILI" is a nod to the resilient women Cinde assisted during her 3-month volunteer assignment in Africa near Mount Kilimanjaro. Her innovation later sparked small women-owned microloan businesses, as they transformed the carrier into aprons using locally made fabrics and textiles..

Dedicated to social justice, she assists Afghan refugees, supports vulnerable women and mentors at-risk youth, in addition to advocating for funding for breast cancer research.

2023 Patient of Courage Dana DonofreeDana Donofree

Nominated by Jonathan Bank, MD, and Ron Israeli, MD

Diagnosed with breast cancer at 27, Dana Donofree endured a bilateral mastectomy, reconstruction and chemotherapy. While satisfied with her initial reconstruction, Dana opted for a prepectoral conversion in 2021, further enhancing her recovery and chest strength.

An aspiring fashion designer, she saw a gap in post-surgery intimate apparel for breast cancer survivors and chest surgeries. Leveraging her background from Savannah College of Art and Design, she launched AnaOno in 2014 – a line dedicated to people post-breast surgery. Her mission? Ensure every woman feels beautiful, confident and supported.
